Gastone Rinaldi was born in Padua in 1920.
In 1916 Gastone's father Mario established RIMA, a manufacturer of metal furniture and in 1948, together with his brother Giorgio, Gastone Rinaldi took over from his father in managing the business. Domus published their creations regularly and he won prizes and critical acclaim for his designs throughout the second half of the 20th Century.
He worked with Gio Ponti and in 1950 he designed the chairs for the Hospital Section of the IX Milan Triennial. In 1952, he attended the XXX Milano Fair in the section curated by Alberto Rosselli, Ettore Sottsass and Marco Zanuso. The armchairs for the Piccolo theatre of Milan followed, with Zanuso. In 1954, he won the Compasso d'Oro for the chair DU30. He collaborated with Ponti, Parisi, De Carli and Gardella in the American venture Altamira. In later life he established his own business Thema, and received further nominations for the Compasso D'Oro.
His designs for RIMA from the 1950s remain the most rare and highly sought after. -
