A 19th Century Chinese sang-de-boeuf glazed porcelain vase

The glaze is a rich oxblood revealing flashes of celadon-green beneath. Subtle crackling and tonal variation give the surface wonderful depth. The foot rim is left unglazed, revealing the biscuit body.
This form is rooted in earlier Ming prototypes but was widely revived during the Qing dynasty, particularly in the 18th–19th centuries. Qing revival sang-de-bœuf porcelain is prized for depth and richness of the copper-red glaze, with its unpredictable, painterly green and white transmutations. The harmonious, restrained form allows the glaze to take centre stage.
