Rare Puglian twin handled maiolica vessel, attributed to Ciro “La Pesa” (1756–1826). Italy, Circa 1810.

A sculptural faience vessel from Grotaglie, Puglia, southern Italy, formed with a baluster body, short cylindrical neck and twin applied loop handles rising from the shoulder to the rim.

An example of the same design can be found in the Museo della Cermamica, Grotaglie.

Comparable examples of this form (ciarla) are illustrated in Salvatore Brittanico, Ciro Ligorio and Francesco Spagnulo, La Pesa: un maestro grottagliese – Profilo documentato del ceramista (Edizioni Esperidi, 2013) and in Keramik aus Süditalien: Apulien, Basilikata, Kalabrien, Kampanien. Related Grottaglie vessels are also discussed in studies of southern Italian ceramics such as L’arte della ceramica in Campania e Puglia: contaminazioni artistiche, culturali e religiose dal ’700 al ’900.
